Lewis Armes refused to walk back to his cell to receive medical attention when he attacked the officer and spat in his face, said prosecutor Lucy Woodcock.

The officer was left with swelling and reddening and pain in his shoulder after the assault on May 1 last year.

Armes, who represented himself, said: "I am sorry about what happened. I have learned from my mistakes.

"I didn't intentionally mean to assault him. I felt threatened. I have just got to deal with it."

The court heard Armes has been recalled to prison and will not be released until June 2026.

"I am due to go before the parole board," he said. "I don't know if this will affect it."

Armed, aged 24, and currently of HMP Oakwood, in Staffordshire, admitted assaulting an emergency worker when he appeared via video-link at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Tuesday.

"As you are a serving prisoner we cannot impose a community order," the presiding magistrate told him.
